Brus
Laguna Information
Brus Laguna is located in the Moskitia (eastern)
region of Honduras. This region makes up 36% of
Honduras and is the least population region in the
country. The coast of this region is home to Caribbean
coastline and beaches, various lagoons and rivers
and pine savanna while the inland region is home
to the largest remaining area of tropical rainforest
in Central America.
Most of the local inhabitants of the area are
from one of 4 indigenous groups the Tawahka, Pech,
Garifuna or Miskito. All indigenous groups maintain
a strong culture with local languages still being
spoken today.

The Miskitos have an amazing history which only
started in the late 1600s through the mixing of
African (Garifuna), English and local Indian blood.
For many years the Miskitos where ruled by a Miskito
king or governor who was actually crowned or appointed
by the British Empire. For many years the Miskito
fought with the British pirates raiding Spanish
settlements throughout Honduras and even into
Nicaragua. To this day the Miskitos are proud
of their English heritage, you will even still
find many Miskitos with English names and there
is many English words in the Miskito language.
Brus Laguna was originally established as an
English outpost and currently is mainly a Miskito
settlement with an estimated population of 6,000
residents. The town is the area’s commercial
center with an airstrip, stores, schools, regional
offices and a few small hotels. You will find
only one or two cars in the area with boat transport
still being the favored means of transportation.
